Preparing for the IELTS
What does IELTS stand for? IELTS is the International English Language Testing System.  It is an internationally recognized English language evaluation of the greatest quality and integrity.  The system is extremely reliable and is a precise assessment of one’s English language capability, specifically taken by those who are looking to study internationally, looking for professional recognition or to bench-mark their standards at the international level.  The partnership of the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations created and own the IETLS exam and they are in control of distributing it internationally.   Taking the test helps determine whether students have the ability to take courses in English.

Making the Cut with Australia Entrance Exams

Every year, over 400,000 international students choose Australia for their study abroad experience. These students come from all over the world to pursue degrees at any academic level. From short term English language instruction to in depth graduate level work, students from all backgrounds and nationalities have discovered the power of an education in Australia. However, with this many students vying for a spot at one of Australia's impressive schools, international students have to prove their merit to make the cut. One way international students can do that is with an Australia entrance exam.

There are many advantages to taking an Australia entrance exam, the first of which is that an international entrance exam proves that the applicant has strong reasoning abilities and critical thinking skills. This quantitative measure is valuable to many schools because studying abroad has high academic demands on students, and schools like to ensure that applicants will be up to the challenge. To prove one’s critical thinking prowess, many schools require international entrance exams such as the ACT or SAT, or other comparative measures.

In addition to the higher level reasoning skills demonstrated by Australia entrance exams, schools also consider the student’s knowledge base. It is important that all students have a strong grasp on the fundamentals, especially since many degree programs in Australia incorporate a general studies element. For undergraduate international entrance exams, most schools will again consider the ACT and the SAT, looking for strong cumulative scores. For advance degrees, the Australia entrance exam requirements will vary, perhaps starting with a GRE or other discipline specific tests.

For students who are choosing to study abroad in Australia, it will also be necessary to prove one’s abilities with the English language through an Australia entrance exam. International entrance exams such as TOEFL or IELTS are generally a required piece of the application process. Most colleges look to see if students have scored as proficient English users, since most of the instruction and coursework will be conducted in English during the student’s stay. If students struggle with the language barrier, they are less likely to succeed.

No matter which Australia entrance exam may be required for admission to an Australian college, all students should take these tests seriously and do everything they can to prepare. First, students need to check with the college of interest as well as their specific area of study in order to make sure they are taking the right tests. Checking the university’s website is a good place to start, but for those who may have more questions, additional information can be found by contacting the school’s study abroad or admissions office.

Once students are certain which international entrance exams they must take, it is up to the student to spend time studying. This preparation can vary in intensity, based on the student’s needs. Taking a preparatory class is not necessary, but can be especially helpful for students who are concerned about their scores. Students may also be wise to take the Australia entrance exam well in advance. This way, if students do not get the score they want the first time around, there is still time to take the test again to have a stronger score for the admissions process.

For some students, thinking about an Australia entrance exam may seem tedious. However, this important step in the process can give students a wonderful opportunity to shine. Through these exams, students can not only gain admission to some of the best schools in the world, but they can also prepare themselves academically and linguistically for the invigorating challenge that awaits them during their studies in Australia.
